  1. My favorite character in the play is Beneatha. She is my favorite because she is very independent and is always sure about what she wants. She is always changing what she does with her life and wants to explore. Beneatha said that she doesn’t want to be like Ruth or Mama because they both got married and then didn’t explore or try new things. She is a good role model in the book. She doesn’t listen to people if they tell her not to be a doctor or learn about her heritage. Also my least favorite character is Walter. I don’t like him as much because he is not a good husband most of the time. He is always going to The Green Hat and drinking instead of being home with his wife and kid. Walter also always has one thing on his mind and has to achieve it in order to be happy, like with the liquor store. Then he spent all the money on the store and didn’t put any away for Beneatha. Which is self-centered.

  2. The character I admire most is Ruth. Because she, in my opinion is the strongest character in the play. She’s willing to sacrifice herself with an abortion for her family. Also, whenever Walter would say hurtful things to her, she would just soak it in and offer him warm milk (for instance). She is the only character that Mama listens to and talks to about personal matters, so from gaining Mama’s trust she has to be a very respected person. The character I least admire is definitely Walter. Walter’s dream makes me mad because its all the pros of the plan, not the cons. He doesn’t think thoroughly through his plans. He disrespects Ruth and his mother, and Beneatha. Hes very self centered, and selfish.

  3. The character I most admire in the play is Beneatha because she is the only one in the family that wants to do something with her life. I don’t think that she should look up to Ruth and mama because they decided not to go through all of the schooling like she has. Beneatha decided that she wanted to reach her goal of being a doctor or a nurse and for that reason I look up to her. Beneatha also does not want her life to be wasted she always puts school first and understands what mama is doing for her to be able to pay for school. That is why I think mama does that because she feels bad that she did not want to do anything in her life and she supports Beneatha by learning from her mistakes. The character I least admire is Walter because he is very pushy and if he does not get what he wants he accepts mama to help him do it. He also does not support Ruth. When Ruth said she was thinking of abortion, mama expected him to support her and say that it was not the right thing to do, but instead he just walked out. Walter is self-centered and puts him self first before Ruth and Travis. He is always at the Green Hat instead of helping at home. This is why I disrespect him. Because he is rude to his family and he is jealous and wants to be rich.

  4. The character that I most admire is Mama.I think she is very strong and keeps the family together. Mama will do whatever she needs to do to make sure the family doesn't fall apart. And that they stay strong during hard times. Mama also wants to make everyone happy. Thats why she bought the house and gave some money to walter and some money to beneatha. And the character that I least admire is beneatha I dont like her because she thinks that she knows everything. And she always uses word that she knows ruth and mama wont understand. She also thinks that she is better than everyone because she is smarter and she doesnt always respect mama.

  5. In the play, A raisin in the sun, I most admire the character of mama. She has lost a husband and she is still taking care of her two kids and her grandson. Mama has the power to preserve and to keep living day by day. She makes time for her kids and grandkids, and takes care of them. Mama even bought Travis a house with the money she got from her husbands insurance money. That money was her money. She didn’t have to give it to anyone else. She could have spent it on whatever she wanted, but she gave it to her grandson and they bought a house. Mama also makes sure she gives time to her kids and grandkids. She makes sure their dreams prosper and come true. My least favorite character in the play is George. He’s is cocky and arrogant and takes Beneatha for granted. He never talks to Beneatha, and he barely communicates with her at all. George also doesn’t respect her. George is annoying and just shouldn’t be in the play in my opinion. He is cocky because he is rich, so he thinks he is above everyone else he meets. Also I don’t like Mr. Lindner. He goes to the Younger family and tries to offer them money to not move in to their house. He had the nerve to come into their home and tell them to not move into their own house which they just bought. He is also prejudiced because he says its not because of their color or their race, but when it really is all prejudiced. Those are my 2 least favorite people because they are mean and evil and are just annoying to hear in the play. Neither of them care for others and they are both just looking to get some personal gain out of everything they do in life.

  6. I admire Beneatha the most out of all the characters. She is very
strong willed and independent. She wants to defy the odds and do what
other colored women can’t do. She wants to follow her dreams and
become a doctor because she doesn't want to be traditional and I think
that is really cool. She wants more in a marriage than just an
attraction to somebody, but someone that will stand by her decisions
and beliefs. She is trying to find herself and become something bigger
than what she is. I wish I could be as strong willed as her. The
character that I least admire would have to be Walter. Although Walter
is a good man and I respect him, I don't think he knows how to make
good moral decisions for himself and his family. He knows the right
thing to do, but he doesn't do it. I do not think he is a good role
model for Travis. He is also too interested in money and he thinks
that money is life. His yearning to become the partial owner of a
liquor store is tearing his family apart and he is not very
respectful. He is kind of selfish as well and looks out mostly for
himself and doesn’t have a good relationship with Ruth

  7. The character I most admire is Beneatha. Although she is can be a bit stuck up at times, she makes up for it in attitude. I admire that she is willing to take risks and be a unique individual, while still being true to herself. I look up to her in the fact of how she is not afraid to be who she is and can stick up for herself. The thing I admire most, though, is her courage. I am extremely shy and usually do not have the guts to say my opinion, unless I am with people I am comfortable with. Beneatha states what is on her mind, whenever it is on her mind.

The character I least admire in the play is Walter. He acts like a child. He makes actions without thinking and puts his family in danger. He rushes into situations without thinking them through. Not only does he do this; but he acts like he only cares about himself and puts his family’s needs and concerns behind his own. I do not respect that whatsoever.

My favorite character in a Raisin in the Sun is Ruth mostly because she is the person I speak for in class but, I also like her because she is the most realistic and she works hard in what she does. She is realistic in this book because she believes that Walters plan with the liquor store will not work and it ends up not working anyways. Another reason that she is realistic is because she believes that no low class family can move up in the economic ladder, and she is partially right. She is a hard worker because she supports her family by cleaning people’s laundry and she also cooks all the meals in the house. The character that I least admire in the play is Walter Lee because although he is a great father he is a terrible husband and has bad work ethic. He has bad work ethic because when he was depressed he would just go to the green hat to drink away his problems. He went 3 days straight without going to work and did not even let anybody know. He is a terrible husband because he didn’t even want to hear that his wife was expecting another child and that she might even abort the baby. Another reason that I don’t like his character is because he spent money that was not even his and not only that but he did not end up doing anything with the money. He says that the money he lost was made out of his father’s flesh and it is like even though he says that he really does not care about his father but the money that he lost was his lifeline. Walter doesn't deserve that great family that he has and especially doesn't deserve Ruth

  9. The character I most admire is Lena, also known as mama. I admire her most because she has the best values in life. She doesn’t care about money that much and it doesn’t play an important role in her life. She values hard work and pride. Her husband worked very hard to support his family, and Lena was extremely upset of how happy everybody was when the money came. She was upset that they remember her husband for his money. I agree with her when she says how money isn’t everything and having pride and sticking with your family is. Lena is a very religious woman and thanks god for everything that happens to her in life. I value that too because without religion, there is no afterlife and people just do what they want and don’t thank anyone for helping them get there. Lena is also a generous woman. She is generous to her family and other people. She supports her family, supports their dreams, and supports their success. The character I least admire is Walter. I least admire Walter because he has horrible values in life. He thinks that money is the key to life and the key to happiness. I disagree with that because money is not everything, especially when you don’t put your family first. I like that Walter has dreams but his dreams are unrealistic and he puts his dream before his job, and before his wife and kid. Walter needs to focus on his family and his life “down in earth” and not shooting for stars that are out of reach. I also disagree with Walter when he says, “Women are the most backward race.” That is a very disrespectful thing to say and it is ignorant. He thinks he is the best and everything is about him.

  10. The character I admire most in the play is Asagai. He seems very down-to-Earth rather than George, Beneatha's other love interest. Asagai has my respect because he speaks to Beneatha as an equal, whereas George talks down to her because he is wealthy and she comes from a bit of a poor family. Beneatha enjoys being around Asagai because she can learn about his Nigerian culture. He has a lot to offer for a man. Also, Beneatha's personality is better fit for Asagai because he is more tolerant of her than George, who usually just shoots her down and tells her to shut up when she tries to express herself or her dreams. At the Green Hat, George tries to move in on Beneatha in a very piggish manor. This just seems like something Asagai would never do. He respects Beneatha. Asagai stays out of harms way by not saying negative things to Beneatha (like most of her own family does) and can accept the love-hate concept that the Youngers often practice. Another reason I admire Asagai is that although he is intelligence and of high importance at the university, he is not one to brag.

The character I most dislike in A Raisin in the Sun is Ruth. I dislike her because she is suuuch a pessimist when it comes to just about everything. Though the Youngers' apartment may be pretty worn down, it's like she has zero appreciation for Walter and Mama's work that must be done to pay off rent for where they live. She is always complaining that for so long she's wanted a new home, and she wants to get out of there fast... but when Walter tries to make a shortcut for them, she turns him down. She is very unsupportive of Walter and does not listen to what he has to say.

*I am not saying she's in the wrong, though. Walter is such an idiot!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~! (Seriously though. What a moron.)*

  11. My favorite character in the play, "a raisin in the sun," has to be Mama or Lena Younger. she is the mother of Walter and Benetha younger, the mother in law of Ruth Younger, Walter's wife, and the grandmother of Travis Younger, Ruth and Walter's son. Mama is personally my favorite character because she is a very kind, pious, but firm and disciplined person. She treats her children with mutual respect and tries to guide them the right way in life. She is a kind and loving person and she keeps the Younger family happy by doing everything she can to make sure everyone is happy. She even spent her husband, Walter Lee Younger sr.'s inheritance money from his life insurance on a house for the family to have instead of the cockroach infested tenement they used to live in. My favorite character in the play, "a raisin in the sun," is with no doubt Mr. Linder. even though Mr. Linder is a briefly seen side character he has to be the antagonist of the story. I believe that Mr. Linder is the antagonist of the story because he disturbs the Younger's entire moving process. Mr. Linder tries to offer the Younger family more money than they paid for the house they plan to move in because where they plan to move is an all white community and Mr. Linder wants to try to keep it that way and if it wasn't for the younger family's pride he would have been successful with his mission. For the brief time he's on stage he bombards the Youngers with multiple excuses that make the neighborhood seem unappealing to them.

  12. The character I admire most in the play, A Raisin in the sun, is mama. This is because she has spent almost her whole life living in that small cramped apartment and she is still working hard. All she cares about is her family, which is why she gave Walter the rest of the money, unlike Walter who thinks that money is life and that having money is the only way to be happy. Mama is very strong because she has had so little but she made the best out of what she did have. The character I least admire in the play is Willie. I admire him the least because Willie knew that the money Bobo and Walter were giving to him was all the money that the two of them had and he ran off with all their money. Willie is cold hearted for stealing that money but at the same time he is a lot like Walter because obviously all he wants is money. I think that Walter shouldn’t have given all of the money to Willie because now the Younger's are basically poor again and they also don’t have the money to pay for school for Beneatha.

  13. The character I admire most in the play is Beneatha. The reason that Beneatha is my favorite character is because she is independent and doesn’t care what other people think of her. She is always trying new things and won’t give up on her dreams. Although she can be snotty and stuck up sometimes, I admire the fact that she sticks with what she believes and doesn’t change her mind because somebody tells her to. Beneatha knows how to stick up for herself and she does it well. Beneatha also wants to find her identity. She is a confident girl who wants to know more about where she came from and who she really is. When Asagai makes fun of her for being an assimilationist, she wants to prove him wrong because although she goes along with the styles she is different, she doesn’t do what every other woman does and she doesn’t want what other woman want either. She is strong and independent and that’s one of the reasons I admire her the most in the play. The character in the play that I admire the least is Walter. The reason for this is because although Walter has “dreams” too, his dreams aren’t like Beneatha’s. Beneatha’s dreams are about doing something in her life and making a difference while Walter’s dreams are all about getting rich and living a life where he doesn’t have to work so hard anymore. Walter has a tendency to just give up and walk out when he doesn’t like something. He doesn’t stay and talk about it, and work it out; he just walks out and goes out drinking. He also isn’t very considerate of the rest of the family. You see this when he takes all the money, and doesn’t listen to Mama about putting some away from Beneatha. Walter has a philosophy that money is life and because of that he doesn’t see things the way he should, and that’s the reason that he is my least favorite character in the play.

  14. The character i admire the most is Mama. I admire Mama because she is very giving and caring about her children, when Mama got the insurance money she never even thought about taking a vacation for herself, she only thought about giving the money to her children and grandchildren. Although grandma has had to live in the small apartment for years, she never lost her dream of having a house of her own. I also like how mama gave Walter the rest of her money almost knowing that he would loose it, but she still gave him the money and still trusted him to do the right thing. ALthough Mama is not very accepting to some things i do think she is still very kind. It took me a while to think of the character i least admire. At first, i thought about Walter and how he had lost his own dads death money, but i can't blame walter for being ignorant and wanting to chase his dream. So then i thought about the George and how he tried to push benethea into doing something that she didn't want to do. Although Benethea is very annoying and needs to shut up, he should not try to push her into doing something that she doesn't want to do. I also don't like how all George cares about is money, all he wants to do in his life is get a job in his dads company, make his money and then get married. I think George is completely wrong for Benethea, and that Benethea needs someone more like Asigai who talks to Benethea and has more values than just money.

  15. The character I admire the most in this play is Mama. I admire Mama the most because the Younger family is trying to live in a small place with not a lot of wealth and Mama is taking the responsibility to hold this family up. When times are hard with the Younger family, Mama just sees it as a normal day and that is why she doesn’t get angry or stressed a lot so she can keep the family in order. The check that Mama received was the money from her husbands death and she decided to split it for the whole family. Beneatha received some for her career, Walter received some for his wife and kid and Mama spent the rest of the money on the house. Mama did the right thing with the money and used it for a house because it is for the whole family and with another kid on the way no they have the space to live a better life. Mama received a check that was her money and instead of spending it on her self she supported the whole family, which shows how she is the center of the Younger family.
The character I least admire is George Mirchurnson. I least admire George because he thinks differently than others when he shouldn’t. George thinks that because he is wealthy he can show off his money by spending it. George is dating Beneatha and he thinks he can do what ever he wants but Beneatha doesn’t admire him so much because of his cocky personality. Beneatha likes asagai more because he has a better personality and is kind while George just likes her for her looks. George should be more kind and generous.

  16. The character I admire the most in the play, A Raisin in the sun is Momma. I admire Momma the most because she is a very honest and hardworking person. She always looks out for her family and does everything she can for them. I can tell she is a very hardworking person because she escaped from slavery in the south and has put her whole life to getting better things and paying for everything for her and her family while she started with nothing. Also her reaction when she realizes Walter lost the rest of the money was outrageous so it showed how she and her husband worked so hard their entire life because that money meant everything to her. Another reason Momma is my most admired person of the play is because she understands people and their problems and doesn’t just blow everybody off for her own dreams like the other characters. An example would be when she understands what Ruth is thinking and going through. Momma is also very in control of everything and doesn’t overreact or get wild when she’s going through a bad day or a hard time. She takes everything she believes in very seriously and makes sure that what she believes is enforced among her family so they turn out good and don’t live a morally bad life The Character I least admire in the play is Willy Harris. I admire him the least because he pretends to be Bobo and Walters friend and business partner. He really just wanted their money so he gained their trust and then Walter and Bobo let him hold the money and he just ran away with the money which was all the money that Walters dad worked for his entire life, also the money for Beneathas medical school.

  17. The character i most admire is Mama because she always helps the family any way she can. No matter what happened she always found a way to keep the family somewhat happy. When Ruth was considering an abortion Mama played a major role in keeping the baby. Another reason I like mama is because she almost always stays calm. She stayed calm when she learned that the new neighbors in Clybourne Park didn't want them there. Without Mama the family might not be as close as they are now. She was there when Walter and Ruth were fighting and if she wasn't there, their marriage might not be as strong as it is. The character i least admire is Willy Harris. The reason i don't like him is because he is a con artist that took advantage of Walter. Willy Harris pretended to be Walter and Bobo's friend and then told them about great business opportunities. Once he successfully got them interested, it was only a matter of time before they gave him their money. As soon as Walter gave him the money Willy left town. This was especially cruel because Walter's father worked for that money all his life, and it was gone in a week.

In the play a raisin in the sun the character I most admire is Walter. The reason I like Walter is because he knows that there is more to life then just being a chauffer. He wants to make more of himself and his family then just living in a tiny apartment. He wants his family to be living in a mansion with people working for him instead of him not being on control of his own life. At times he may not be the best man but that is only because he is tired of living in these conditions and nobody gives him a chance to make something of himself. The person I least admire in the play would have to be mama. I do not like mama because she is very thick headed when it comes to listening to Walters’s business propositions. She would not even let him talk about the idea to buy a liquor store and all of the money that he could have gotten. And when Beneatha speaks her mind about god she is slapped by mama which I think is wrong because she should have the right to speak her mind about anything she wants.

  19. Dan Vellone:

The character I admire most is Mama. She is strong willed and holds the family together in difficult times. After her husband’s death, she stays strong and keeps order in the family. She is always doing what she thinks is best for everyone. When she buys the house, she does it to improve the lives of everyone in the family and even though Walter doesn’t like it (or admit it) at first, he grows into the idea after Mama gives him the money that wasn’t used on the house. She brought up her children in the best way she could with what was available to her. She always does what is best for everyone and seldom thinks just about herself. She even set aside some of the life insurance money for college for Beneatha’s medical school even though other people don’t believe in her dream. My least favorite character in the play is George. He seems to only think about himself and only value money and looks. While he and Beneatha were out dancing, he explained that she was lucky to have looks and without them, people might think she’s crazy. He doesn’t believe in her dream of becoming a doctor and would rather have her stay in the house and raise children. He doesn’t really care about his culture and only about what his life will be like in the future.

  20. Jenni Fusco
The character i admire most is Bennie because she is such a
    strong, determined individual. In the
1950's women were known to have a certain place in the house. Being an African-
American women, Bennie has to face a lot of obstacles. Bennies dream is to
become a doctor, most women back then where just nurses. Bennie studies hard
and is determined to become a doctor. Bennie has tried many different hobbies
because she wants to live life to the fullest. She also wants more in a
marriage than just being attracted to someone because of their looks and
wealth. Bennies newest interest is to learn more about her African background.
She doesn't want to e typical African- American. The character i least admire
is Walter. All Walter cares about is
money and living life like a rich white man. He has selfish, unattainable
dreams and is very disrespectful to the
women in his family. He is too caught up in thinking about himself and his
dreams that he's forgotten the important things in his life. Walter really
bothered me when Ruth told him she wanted to have an abortion and all he did
was walk out. I thought that was very immature. He also is very immature when
it comes to dealing with his feeling and not getting what he wants. When things
like this happen he just storms out of his house to go and get drunk.
