Beneatha and Mama argue about their beliefs in God. Beneatha believes “it’s all a matter of ideas, and God is just an idea I don’t accept.” (51) Explain Beneatha’s belief in God and how she justifies her moral actions. Then explore your beliefs in God/spirituality. What do you feel should guide human behavior?

ReplyDeleteBeneatha claims that God is simply a concept used to keep moral deeds in check. But she kind of implies that God is not necessary because she wont go out and do something "morally wrong". Personally, being Catholic and all, I can somewhat respect Beneatha's opinion on being skeptical to God. However, you shouldn't go proclaiming that God is simply an "idea", just in case you offend someone around you. People don't like having their beliefs shattered, and that can make "some" people, pissed enough to fight over their beliefs to quite an extent (Crusaders, Tali-ban, Nazis etc.). So it's okay to harbor your own beliefs, but don't be an ass about it.
