The Necklace. De Maupassant was interested in the psychology of characters, so its not surprising that he tells this famous story from the limited point of view, of Mathilde Loisel.

  1. I do not like mathidle. I think she is a very selfish and greedy lady.If i where the husband I would throw he out on the street. In the book she said she was unhappy that she didnt have jewelery even after the guy bought her a dress

  2. I don't like Mathilde. Not because she complained about not having a dress or jewelry but because she didn't do anything to try and get these things.

  3. Mathilde is one of those people who are never content with what they have. Even if she was rich she would most likely still want more than she already had, which is weird since this type of personality doesn't usually apply to the low class and mostly applies to upper class people.

  4. I think that Mathilde is a brat who has a good life. All she does is complain nothing more nothing less. She has a maid to clean and cook for her and that still isn’t enough. She has a personality that makes her seem poor when in reality she isn’t. I think that Mathilde deserved to go through all the trouble of finding the necklace because it might of taught her some sort of lesson.

  5. Mathilde, in my opinion, is a sad and lonely woman. She doesn’t have anything nice to wear, and doesn’t have a lot of friends. Mathilde is always going to want more things, she will never be happy with what she has. She will always want more things, always have more dreams.

  6. Mathilde is a greedy person. She is never satisfied with what she has. She always wants the net best thing. What ever she has, she is not happy. What ever she want, she can't have. When her husband buys her things she is never satisfied. What ever she has, she wants something better. What ever she wants, she cant have. Also throughout the book she's always sorry for herself and is never thankful for what she has.

  7. I don't like Mathilde. I think she is a gold digger. I think she is a gold digger because she wanted to marry a more wealthy person but she didn't have enough money or land so she didn't get married. She finally married a less wealthy person but i don't think she was fully satisfied. I don't think she was fully satisfied because when her husband got her invited to a fancy dance she started to cry because she didn't have a good enough dress and jerwely. She cared depley about how others thought of her and she wanted to look as if she had more money then she does.

  8. I thought that Mathilde had been spoiled all her life, but mainly I thought she was a hipocrite. She always complained about how poor she was, how she could not afford nice clothing and jewelery, but it was her own fault. She'd put herself and her husband in debt for 10 full years because she lost the necklace, and she was the one who wanted it in the first place. She never has enough, and though she blames her satisfied husband, she's to blame. Not to mention, she didn't even help find the necklace nor pay off the debt, she had her husband do that.

    I hate her.

  9. I think that Mathilde is an unappreciative person. She doesn't value what she has. She has the essentials. She has food, water, shelter, and more. Here's an example to prove that Mathilde is an unappreciative person. Her husband invites her to one of the most exclusive parties. She says she can't go because she doesn't have a good dress. Her husband then gives her four hundred francs to buy a beautiful dress. She then says she can't go to the party because she has no necklace to match the dress. To the husbands luck he remembers that her wife was good friends with a jeweler. The jeweler then loans her the necklace for the party. Everything has to be perfect for Mathilde or else she is going to be upset.

  10. In my opinion Mathilde is selfish and doesn't appreciate anything she owns. Her husband was nice enough to buy her a nice dress to go to the ball with, but she still wants more to wear. so she borrows her friends necklace, just so she can look the prettiest.

  11. Mathilde is very selfish and is very needy. Mathilde is very selfish because when she was getting the dress she did not want to sound to greedy and ask for too much, but she did not care wether her husband needed or wanted the money for himself. She is also needy because she would not go with just roses, she needed jewelry and that is why she is so far in debt.

  12. I honestly think Mathilde is very greedy. She will never stop wanting sthings she doesnt have because thats the kind of person she is. When her husband bought her the dress to go to the ball she didnt think it was enough, which is an example of her greedy selfish attitude in life. I can learn from Mathilde that if you act greedy and selfish you will end up in a bad position in life.

  13. I think Mathilde was the kind of person who was never satisfied with what she had. After her husband gave her money for a dress, she said she needed jewels. In addition to being greedy she never appreciated what she had, she had a stable lifestyle and a caring husband. One could compare her to Curley's Wife because she too wanted more than she had.

  14. I think that Mathilde was a person who always wanted more and was never satisfied. She always had to have the best and would get upset if she'd have to settle for less. She was selfish and never really thought about what other people wanted, even when she lost her friends necklace, all she was worried about was that her friend would get mad at her instead of how her friend would feel if she lost the necklace. In the story after her husband gives her money to buy a dress, she complains about not having any jewelry and when her husband suggests using flowers, she's disgusted with the thought. She is the type of person who always wants more and even when they have everything it won't be enough.

  15. Mathilde was very needy of things she didnt need. She needed to be more thankful for the stuff she has and not the stuff she doesnt have.

  16. “The Minister of Education and Mme. Georges Rampouneau beg M. and Mme. Loisel to do them the honor to pass the evening with them at the palace of the Ministry, on Monday, January 18.”
Instead of being delighted, as her husband hoped, she threw the invitation on the table with annoyance, murmuring—
“What do you want me to do with that?”
These quotes show that Mathilde was never greatfull for what she had even when she was given great things.

  17. Mathilde was a poor girl, and she wanted people to feel bad for her because she couldn't find anything to wear. She wanted to have people give anything to her. Mathilde always wanted more than she had. That is why I view her as a person who keeps wanting more.

  18. I think that Mathilde always wanted what she couldn't have. Her husband was the one working for her to have what she could, and because of her greediness and selfishness her husband had to work harder to make more money for her and make a lot of sacrifices just so that she can have nice things to show off to other people so they don't think less of Mathilde.

  19. In my opinion I think that Mathilde is greedy.
And took what she had for granted, her and her husband weren't the richest of people but they also weren't the poorest. They has the basic needs of life and Mathilde still wanted more. I sympathize with her for wanting to look good for a night because when you go out who doesn't want to look good. But her husband and to give up things for her to have what she wanted. He had to work more, borrow money from people. And had to give all his money he had from his father to Mathilde for her to buy a simple dress.

  20. I didn't like Mathilde because she had a perfectly fine life and always wanted more. She was ungrateful even though she had a nice husband who gave her a nice dress to wear, and nice friends who gave her a beautiful necklace. Her husband was willing to give her any dress, but she was always unhappy with what she got. She was so worried about what other people at the party would think of her, that she made her husband work even harder for her, when she should've been happy with what she had.

  21. Mathilde is stupid because she comes from a life of having nothing and then a nice little lady offers her jewelry but of corse she had to go for the biggest and most expensive, or thats what she thinks. the neckless Mathilde chooses is a so called diamond one and when she takes to the party she is more concerned of looking good than having fun, but all of that blew up in her face with the irony of being greedy.

  23. My prospective of Mathilde is being very needy. She always wants more than what she has. She's never appreciative of what she has infront of her.I can't blame her though. Who in this world doesn't want more than what they have, like money!? but when she's invited to the party all she's worried about is having all the 'glam', attention, and looking amazing. It back fired on her when she lost the "diamond" neckless that her friend gave her. She spent 10 years trying to replace something that was fake. she should've just been happy with what she had instead of being greedy.

I think that Mathilde is very selfish and she doesn't appreciate the
things she has. I think she is these two things because she is never
happy with what she has and she always wants more. For example ,
"feeling herself born for every delicacy and every luxury." I think
that she needs to realize no ones gets everything that they want, they
should be happy with what they have.

  25. Danielle Iannace:
I view Mathilde as a materialistic woman with great respect for others. I believe she cares about how she looks and wants to look better than others and have better things than others; but I also believe that she respects people close to her because she replaced her friend's necklace and nearly went bankrupt because of it.

I personally didn't really like Mathilde. She seemed very high- maintence and hard to please. She was always complaining, espessially to her husband."Instead of being delighted, as her husband hoped, she threw the invitation on the table with annoyance, murmuring—". I think this quote shows how hard she is to please. Her husband worked hard to get that ticket for her and he was excited to give it to her. But she turned it into negative and complained about how she had nothing to wear. I think she was also kind of rhude.

  27. Samantha:

I view Mathilde as self-centered because she only thinks about what she
wants like how she would spend days grieving on how she was poor and could
not have money and the fancy clothes and jewelry. She is also cunning
because she tells her husband that she can’t go to the ball because she
doesn’t have a dress and he only wants to make her happy. So he ends up
giving her enough money to get the dress. But she is also loyal because she
took her friends necklace and lost it. She ended up replacing it and working
the money off for 10 years with her husband.

I thought that Angelle telling the court that her father made her drive the car was a good idea because him spending time in jail would teach him a lesson. I think that she does still care about her father and that is why she said what she said because if she did not care she would of lied and let her father get drunk again. If I was in Angelles position I would have told the jury as well, to teach my parents a lesson that what they did was wrong and serving time in prison would help them learn no to do it again.

If I were in her shoes I would have never even thought twice of saying
something. The first time you get a DUI it’s a mistake the second time you
do it it’s a problem and especially endangering your children like that
isn’t a smart idea not that my parents would ever put me in that situation.
But over all I liked the story it was pretty entertaining.
